John Anthony O’Connell, 86, of Cranston, RI, passed away on Sunday, October, 20, 2024.
John was born on September 16, 1938 in Providence, RI to Josephine (Malloy) and John O’Connell. He was a beloved spouse, sibling, parent, grandparent and a friend.
John attended Blessed Sacrament School and Hope High School in Providence, RI. He went on to be an engineering surveyor for the RIDOT for 44 years. What he enjoyed most was his history classes and playing varsity basketball.
John lived in the Mt Pleasant section of Providence for over 75 years and enjoyed volunteering and Vice President of the Mt Pleasant Little League, enjoyed hiking Mt Washington, and was an avid runner and trained for numerous races around the state. John was a true fan of sports, coaching and watching his sons and grandchildren play was his favorite and he loved the Boston Celtics, New York Giants and Boston Red Sox.
John is survived by Karen Lucia O’Connell, his wife of 63 years, children: John William O’Connell, Christopher John O’Connell, Daughter-in-laws Elaine O’Connell and Wilma Guieb, Sister-in-law Wilma Maisano, Grandchildren Brendan, Ryan, Dylon, Aden and Siena O’Connell and all his nieces, nephews and cousins. The caregivers at Cedar Crest Nursing Facility, Benny and Betty.
He is preceded in death by brother Francis O’Connell and sister Elizabeth Petrosinelli.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, October 28th at 10 am in St Thomas Catholic Church, 65 Fruit Hill Ave., Providence, RI 02909. Visiting hours will be on Sunday. October 27th from 2-5pm at Skeffington Funeral Home and Cremations, 925 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence. Burial will be private.
